CT Scan Imaging

A computed tomography (CT) scan is an X-ray procedure that creates 3-D, cross-sectional images of the inside of the body. Taking multiple X-rays at different angles, CT scans combine many images into one highly detailed image of bone, organs, and tissue. At Rahway Regional Cancer Center, our CT scan clinic is led by Dr. Eric Karp, who uses the most advanced, state-of-the-art methods to precisely diagnose our patients and form the most effective treatment plan possible to combat cancer.

How CT Scans Work

CT scan imaging devices look like large, circular tunnels with a long table attached. To receive a CT scan, patients first lay on this table. Then, a member of our care team slides a portion of the patient’s body into the scanner and powers it on. This procedure is often short, lasting only a few minutes. In some cases, a dye is injected into a patient’s veins so that the scanner produces clearer results.

Since it produces such a top-quality, high-resolution image, CT scans can help to quickly pinpoint the location of internal tumors. They can also provide information about how far along certain cancers have progressed and whether a tumor is responding to treatment.

Role in Cancer Treatment

Aside from providing helpful diagnostic information, CT scan imaging can also aid with the treatment of certain cancers. At Rahway Regional Cancer Center, Dr. Eric Karp uses the GE Lightspeed RT16 Wide Bore with LAP Laser Simulation System for his patients. This modern, feature-packed device combines several processes, such as simulation, fluoroscopy, and respiratory gating, to plan and deliver targeted radiation to his patients. The benefits include:

  • Pinpointing the tumor’s location and monitoring its progression
  • Allowing care providers to plan treatment that accord with patient breathing patterns
  • Accommodating different patient sizes and positions with a large opening
  • Easing the patient’s experience thanks to a more comfortable, open space
