Rahway Regional Cancer Center Technology and Treatment Plans

Rahway Regional Cancer Center is dedicated to providing each of its patients with a level of personalized care that is unrivaled, delivering treatment plans that are specifically designed to account for the subtleties and nuances of each individual patient’s case.

Dr. Eric Karp and his team utilize state of the art technologies and equipment in their quest to conquer cancer.

CT Scan Imaging

TechnologyA patient’s individualized treatment plan starts with CT scan imaging of the area to be treated in RRCC’s dedicated GE Lightspeed RT16 Wide Bore with LAP Laser Simulation System.  This CT is specially designed for radiation therapy patients and is custom fit with a wide bore (larger opening than standard CT scans) that guarantees the comfort and safety of patients of all sizes.  This is an ultra-high speed CT scanner that considerably shortens the time necessary for treatment planning.  It is also a high-resolution unit allowing for superior definition of tumors versus healthy anatomy.

World Leading Treatment Planning Software

TechnologyPerhaps the most important piece of equipment in any radiation treatment facility is the treatment planning computer. The treatment planning system is a combination of powerful computers running technologically advanced software that is used to plan radiation treatment delivery.  RRCC houses the most advanced and sophisticated treatment planning system in existence, Philips Syntegra, making the facility one of the few in the United States with fusion capability – the ability to combine diagnostic radiographic imaging, e.g. MR, CT and PET scans, with treatment planning scans performed on site.  Fusion technology allows for greater accuracy in the delivery of radiation therapy with increased effectiveness of treatment and significant reduction in radiation dose to normal tissues.

Image-Guided Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IGRT and IMRT)

TechnologyAfter each patient’s customized treatment plan is designed, RRCC’s advanced and beneficial forms of external beam radiation therapy can begin.

Image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT) utilizes RRCC’s state of the art Varian Trilogy Treatment System. The treatment system, combined with sophisticated computer software, allows RRCC’s team of PhD physicists and certified medical dosimetrists to shape radiation beams and vary their intensity, wrapping the beams of radiation precisely around tumors to destroy cancer cells, while sparing the patient’s surrounding healthy tissue and reducing side effects.  The center also employs highly sophisticated cone beam technology allowing for real-time direct visualization of the patient’s tumor during treatment.  Cone beam technology increases accuracy and safety which results in better cure rates with reduced side effects.

Brachytherapy: The Art and Science of Treating Tumors Directly with Radioactive Sources

Technology

Dr. Karp is one of the world’s leading experts in high dose rate brachytherapy having performed over 3,000 procedures.  RRCC has one of the most experienced brachytherapy teams in the world offering the implantation of radioactive sources directly into tumors and tumor beds.  Dr. Karp commonly uses HDR brachytherapy for gynecologic malignancies including endometrium and cervix as well as cancer of the esophagus. Dr. Karp has also designed and developed custom apparatuses for delivering brachytherapy in highly complex situations requiring specialized care.  Dr. Karp performs this procedure on site at RRCC so his patients may return home soon after the procedure is completed.
